Soul Scrappers Technique Challenge 6B

Good Morning!!

Its been a rather hectic week this week and hoping I do catch up to Friday very soon! I’d hate for Saturday to start and me still being stuck on Wednesday – that just wouldnt be fair!!

Its my turn again to host the Technique Challenge over at the Soul Scrappers forum that was started up by the lovely Erika Martin. We have over 500 members there now in just two months so thats an awesome achievement on its own! There are lots of Challenges, Sketches, ideas and wonderful people to share their talents and help so if you are a scrapper 0r even if you’d like to be a scrapper then pop over to the Soul Scrappers forum and check it all out!

My Technique Challenge this week is to create your own Designer Series Papers using your stamps. Being a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator I love the papers they have and how they all coordinate with the colour families and stamp sets but sometimes you want a paper just a bit different or maybe in different colours.  So today I’m going to share with you how to make your own papers using your stamps and inks.

Supplies needed:

  • Cardstock,
  • Inks (I used Versamark, Mellow Moss, Pretty in Pink, Almost Amethyst and Apricot Appeal)
  • stamps (I used Vintage Vogue and En Francais)
  • Stamp a majig
  • chalks ( i used versamark and chalk for the script in the centre)

I love using my stamps to create designs and the perfect patterned paper for my layout.  This way I can have colours that match my photo’s and I can make my own embellishments and accents and not only that – you know that no one else will have this designer paper you create yourself!

Technique Instructions:

  • Start off with a piece of plain cardstock.  You could use any colour however I found those of the Soft Subtle family and lighter shades would be  better as you need to see the design youre creating!  I tend to use Whisper White or Very Vanilla  as my base and then build these up with colour.
  • I first used the swirl from Baroque Motifs to create my border. You can use the stamp a majig to do this too so that you get the right swirl in the right place if you wish but you really cant go wrong with this stamp!
  • Then I inked up the larger flower from Vintage Vogue (Autumn-Winter Mini Catalogue) and stamped randomly in Pretty in Pink. I then did the same using Apricot Appeal. I then used the smaller flower to ‘fill in the gaps’ using Barely Banana and Almost Amethyst.
  • I then tore up scrap paper to cover where I’d stamped and filled the centre in using the En Francais background with Versamark. I then grabbed my pastels and my handy sponge and ‘popped’ the script. Doing the centre this way gives it a softer hue rather than stamping it in the Creamy Caramel ink.
  • Now look at your page and see if you are happy with the result. You may feel the need to fill in any ‘white space’ either by sponging or adding some more small flowers or maybe some leaves.

I was rather happy with the result of this page and was a little hesitant to put a photo over it!

I was strong and placed the photo on a Pink Pirouette mat  – I’ve also used some rub-ons on the photo but what I did was put the white part of the same rub on up the top left of my photo and the opposite dark part over the bottom right corner and onto the Pink Pirouette mat.

I didnt add much to this layout as I didnt want to detract from the Designer Paper I’d just created and sometimes less really is more!

I made a couple of flower accents from the Vintage Vogue (Autumn-Winter Mini Catalogue). One small one down on the bottom left and then layering both flowers in colours from the layout and a button from the lovely Sherbet Designer buttons.

my matching flower embellishmentFrom this close up you can see that I’ve stamped the larger flower in Pretty in Pink and the small flower in Barely Banana. I’ve then adhered the button to the top. I’ve cut a very thin slither of Apricot Appeal cardstock and threaded it through the button holes and tied it. Now you need to be careful not to pull the knot too tight as the cardstock will break and I know this for a fact!

I do hope you like this challenge and I now challenge you to make a layout using your stamps. You can then leave me a comment and insert the link to your image online or email me a photo of your layout.

Why not pop over to the Soul Scrappers forum and upload your challenge there – there is always a winner each challenge and a small prize. You can find the messages about this challenge here. Its free to join and there really are some wonderfully talented ladies there who share, encourage and inspire!

If you would like to learn how to do this Technique then why not come along to my Scrap A Latte Summer Flower Layout class on 7th April. Class is $15 and I provide all the supplies you will need. Bookings are essential as I only have a small house and seats are limited. There is no need to bring any photo’s as you can add them later.

Dazzled Challenges

Hello!!

Yes today is Saturday and I’m here with  not one but TWO challenges!! Well OK I’ve rolled two challenges into one card ;)  so that counts does it not??

First – the Utah Diva’s Sketch Challenge

When I first saw this sketch I thought ‘how am I supposed to make something with that??”  (sorry Carol) but as I started working well I’ve had so many ideas through my head I’m dizzy!

I remembered the layered window cards I used to use a few years back and have noticed can you can still buy them but they cost more than regular card-stock so I figured I’ll make me own!!

So I just utilised my Stampin’ Up! square punches on the different layers.  You just need to remember to used the larger punch on the top layer and the smaller punch on the base layer – this gives you a little frame around your window.

Here’s my card with the window in it. The window is where the little bird is.  I am sorry about the picture – I had trouble getting a good image with all that white on the top level.

I have used one of the new sets in the Summer Mini Catalogue and its called For Everything and its a great set at just $47.95 for 11 stamps - that’s just $4.35 a stamp - what great value!!

Now for my second  card today ….

I’ve incorporated Carol’s above sketch with Makeesha’s Inkspirations Colour Challenge

and this is what I came up with ….

I am not a huge fan of Cameo Coral but I do quite like how this card turned out.

Can you believe that this card contains just one stamped image and NO ribbon!!!  Its just so unlike me.

This card is very quick and easy as the patterns and saying on the card are both rub ons! The patterns are from the lovely Dots and Designs rub ons and the sentiment is from the Chit Chat rubons and both are from the Summer Mini Catalogue.

The main image is from the Razzle Dazzle stamp set which I’ve coloured using my Stampin’ Write Markers.

If you would like to see more from the Summer Mini Catalogue and you’re free on 6th February, 2010 then call me today to reserve your seat at the Sale A Bration Spectacular I’m running with a couple of Stampin’  Up! demonstrators.  Its at the Ambarvale Re-Creation Centre from 11am to 4pm and costs just $25 – although if you book and pay before 21st January we’ll only charge you $20! Bargain – we’ll have raffles, door prizes, make n takes and lots of displays and demonstrations. Its going to be a wonderful day and I do hope you can come along and enjoy the fun too!

Teacher Gifts

Well we are officially on school holidays here for the Summer break for around six weeks or so.

The girls took these gifts for their teachers … they both managed to have two teachers this year so that meant 4 gifts.  I consulted a lovely teacher and asked what would make a good teacher’s gift. I wanted to make something useful and not just send something in to be put in a cupboard somewhere.

All the items for each teacher were done using the same patterned paper from the new Kaleidoscope Designer Series Paper from the Summer Mini Catalogue.  I just love the colours and designs in these papers!

Two of the teachers had a handmade acetate gift box with toffees inside and the other two had a Votive candle in a holder that was decorated with rubons and also presented in an acetate box.

I do believe all the Teacher’s loved their gifts and one is already talking to people for a class next year.

At least I know now what to make for the teacher gifts next year – hoping that Miss E doesnt get the same teacher next year or I’ll have to think of something else …. or my sister will!

Thanks Jo for the guidance

Now before I share my project with you I also want you to know that if you do make it around to all 30 Blogs involved in today’s Blog Hop and if you make a comment on each one you are then in the running for some Extra Special Blog Candy.  The demonstrators from all over have donated blog candy for this blog hop and if you are the lucky winner you’ll be getting all sorts of parcels and you will truly think that Christmas has come early this year and that you’ve been a very good girl (or guy)!  Now if you do get to all and comment on all the blogs shoot me an email with your name and email address and then everyone who has also visited and commented on all 30 blogs will go in the drawer for the ‘extra special’ blog candy.

Now onto the project …..

BragBookClosedNow I must say how in love with this project I am! It was designed by the very lovely Andrea Walford who is a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator in Canada.

I’ve used the new Kaleidoscope Designer Series Papers through out this project and they are just gorgeous!  Everytime my 12yo walks past my desk she stops, sighs and says “Oh I just love that paper!”  She’s been very good not to take off with it I must say … its very girly and very tweeny!

Now when you open up this Friendship box you will see just how it all works inside. There is a pocket in the inside left of the Box which holds the envelopes.  On the inside on the right you have clear pockets to slot in some cards. BragBookOpen1

I’ve inserted 4 pockets here but you could put in more – you may just need to secure it with something a little stronger like the jumbo brads or similar.

Here’s another view of the inside showing how the ‘pages’ flip/turn.

BragBookOpen2Pretty neat huh???

Now onto the cards …all the cards have been made using the Kaleidoscope Designer SEries Papers and the Nature’s Nest Stamp Set. I’ve used the new Chit Chat rubons for all the sentiments on the cards.

dragonfliesThis first card is done using the dragonfly stamp from Nature’s Nest. I just love dragonflies and as soon as I saw this set I just had to have it! I’ve added a couple of flowers from the Flower Fusion kit and a clear rhinestone brad.

I’ve stamped the dragonflies onto Glossy White and then coloured with the aquapainter using the Classic Stampin’ Pads. I sponged some blue around the dragonflies so it wasnt so ‘white’ then applied the rubon greeting.

turtlefriendsHow great is this turtle??

I dont know about you but ever since Finding Nemo I immediately say ‘duuuuuuude’ whenever I see a turtle so I had to name this stamp ”Crush” did I not? I love that movie!

I’ve stamped ‘Crush’ onto Watercolor Paper in Jet Black Stazon then going from my lightest colour (So Saffron) and built up his shell using More Mustard, Old Olive and Always Artichoke. The grounding is done using Going Gray.  He looks like he’s just about ready to travel along the EAC dont ya think?? I love this sentiment too as its just so very true – Friends make us strong!

See I told you it was a long post didnt I??

TealFeatherNow I must say that being a Stampin Up demonstrator and getting to preorder the upcoming stamps is not only wonderful but you also learn so much!  I wanted to find out if there was any symbology (see i even learn new words!) and there is so much with the Peacock feathers – some of it is good and some not so good.

I was amazed to learn that Peacocks can eat poisonus berries and the like and not be affected in any way – wouldnt that be good if we could bottle that for all those that have allergies to various things.

This is a very quick and easy card. The Peacock feather is stamped on whisper white in black stazon and then I’ve just used the Taken with Teal Ink to colour in the feather and my markers to colour in the ‘eye’.  Its a bit hard to see all the colours in the eye from this photo but I did try to make it as realistic as I could.  another great sentiment from the Chit Chat rubons.

NestingNow the last card I made for this set is of a birds nest with eggs.

Now I’m not sure why but I ‘had’ to paint them blue – then I thought what bird lays blue eggs??

Now I was going to tell you but I wont – I will give an extra prize to the first person to guess that right! So when you leave your comment just add the answer at the end.

Can you see that I snuck in my Baroque Motifs?? I do love that stamp with all the swirls and leaves – its just gorgeous!

I do hope you like this project and if you would like to make one of these I’ll be doing classes in the new year so contact me before Christmas to book your seat.

Now before you click on the next blog to visit as part of this Blog Hop I thank you for putting up with such a long post and I thank all the other Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators participating in this blog hop!

Now dont forget to pop a comment in so youre in the running for the awesome blog candy!

Your next stop on the ESAD Summer Mini Catalogue Blog Hop is Lisa Ryder – she’s a lovely lady and a dear friend and I just know you will love whatever she’s made!

Friends Forever

I’ve seen lots of cards made using acetate and have wanted to try one for a while and well I wasn’t sure where to start or what set to use. Then I noticed the little one on the front cover of our Spring Mini Catalogue.

AcetateFriend1If you look closely you will notice that I have added a few more accents to my card than that on the Mini Cover.  To work out the size I wanted to make I first measured the frame image from the Summer Love rub ons then added a nice margin. I then took 5mm off top, bottom and right side to give me the size of the whisper white insert.

All the rub ons I’ve used came from the Summer Love pack in the Spring Mini Catalogue – I love this set and they are such good value as you get two colour sheets in the pack and it coordinates so well with the Great Friend Stamp set and the Walk in the Park Designer Series Papers.

AcetateFriend2Here is a photo where you can see the shadow on the whisper white layer from those rub ons on the front of the acetate.

I’ve applied the ‘friends forever’ and frame to the front of the acetate piece. Then holding the whisper white piece in place I position the leaves  and small flowers on the whisper white layer.

My good friend Caz has made quite a few so I consulted her on how to assemble them so as not to have the adhesive showing. Now the one on the cover of the Spring Mini has a little baja breeze spine on it which I assume is to cover the adhesive. I didnt really like this way so I decided to use my handy dandy Crop-a-dile and punch a couple of holes and tie some ribbon through to secure it all together.

AcetateFriendInsideThe card opens to the lovely greeting from the great friend stamp set on the left and I’ve added some of the gorgeous butterflies, leaves and other accents.

I love how easy this card was to make and what a special card it then becomes!

If you would like to see how this card is made then why not arrange your very own demonstration and earn free stamps and Stampin’ Up! products while you have a fun evening with your friends stamping and make cards or gifts.

Dont forget about the free ribbon bundle with every $100 order and if your party qualifies then you get another free ribbon bundle!

How sweet is that??    Ring or email me today to arrange your demonstration.

Happy Spring Mini Catalogue!

Today is the day – the new Mini Spring Catalogue starts – its so exciting as the sets inside are all gorgeous as are the accessories and papers. I think this is one of the best Mini Catalogue’s we’ve had in Australia – well so far!

Today is also the day for another Utah Divas Sketch Challenge. sketch41

This is another of those sketches that has so much possibility and you could use for many different sets.

Now I know this wont be a shock to many – but I’ve gone outside the square (circle) yet again. I’ve rotated the sketch and changed the circles to squares!

Hope this doesnt land me in hot water with the new Sketch Co-Ordinator!

I opened the Spring Mini for a little inspiration and only got as far as page 5 and the gorgeous new Summer Love Rub-Ons – these are not only in colour but there are also two sheets in every pack – there’s just so much you can do with this pack and the colours are just soooo pretty!

Here is my card ….

DSC41-SummerLoveDo you see what I see???

Do you??

Look closer ….

There’s NO STAMPING!!!!

Never thought you’d see the day did you??

I’ve put the round square rubons onto whisper white cardstock and then cut around the edge. I’ve then punch three 1 3/8″ squares which I have used the corner round just on two of the corners – just a little different than the normal.

The ‘lace’ is made with the eyelet border punch – if you havent noticed its become one of my most used tools lately! I love that punch! The patterned paper is from the new Walk in the Park Designer Series Paper pack. Another gorgeous paper pack you will ‘need’ to have in your collection.

The flowers down the bottom are again little rubons from te Summer Love Rub-Ons pack.

Now how perfect is this card for someone who loves to stamp and inspires others to do the same – wonder who I can send this one off to??

Want to see the new Spring Mini Catalogue now?? just click on the link in my sidebar – but better grab a cuppa first and a towel – you’ll be drooling over all the lovelies for a while!

Have a totally blessed Saturday!

Diva Sketch #27

Apologies for my late post – it seems the school holidays and the late nights staying up making swaps for convention are starting to catch up with me!

DSC 27

Here is this weeks sketch for the Diva’s Sketch challenge – simple enough with many many possibilities. I love clean simple cards as I think they turn out much more stunning than those weighed down with lots of embellishments and layers.

I went a little different this week with only including a couple of stamped images and they arent the focal point of my card. As stampers we seem to forget all the other gorgeous products we have from Stampin’ Up! to use.

Here is my card and I must say I’m very happy with how it turned out. dsc27-rosepirouetterubonsll

The saying comes from the Love & Laughter Rubons. I love showing my customers the gorgeous Rubons from Stampin’ Up! They have so many uses and they stick to just about anything!

You can use them on

  • cards (as a focal point or decoration)
  • scrapbook layouts
  • photo’s
  • photo frames
  • mirrors
  • candles
  • coffee cups
  • soap
  • candle holders
  • plates
  • laptops (to jazz it up and make it personalised and purty!)
  • glasses
  • jars

I love the soft feminine look and the little rosebuds from A Rose is a Rose just give it that little bit of elegance. You could add some dazzling diamonds to the rosebuds for a little bling if you wanted to. This set makes some gorgeous cards using the 2 step stamping technique.

I do love the Rose is a Rose set and you can expect to see more items made using this set over the next 12 months. The set sounds expensive at $66.95 but it does have 14 stamps in the set so when you break it down its very good value at under $5 per stamp.

The background paper comes from the Bella Rose Designer Series Paper pack which again is just lovely!

I hope you like this card and again I’m sorry I didnt get this post done on Saturday. Have a great day and I’ll be back tomorrow with another post for you and a little hint about next month’s special!

Scrappy Watercolour Stems

I wanted to share with you some cards that I made last week while trying to use up some of my scraps/off cuts and I found these strips of Stampin’ Up!® Watercolour Paper and they were the perfect size for this gorgeous flower from the Embrace Life stamp set. Actually, the chocolate chip layers were also found in my scrap drawers. scrapdrawers

When I create a project all my scraps and off cuts go into these drawers which are separated into each family and one for Neutrals and Designer Series Papers as well.

This makes it easy when I’m making another project and I need a small piece of cardstock I can just pull open the drawer for that family and rummage through for the right colour and hopefully the right size.

Although I do think I need to make some more cards in the soft subtles as I dont seem to be able to close that drawer at the moment! I might need to make up some collage/scrap packs for my customers ;)

This picture gives you a bit of an idea of how I store the scraps … I actually have another set on top with just 3 drawers in it with two being double the depth of these shown.

Here is another card again made using those watercolour paper strips – I think I’ll have to arrange a Stamp A Stack for this design and they really are an easy and elegant card.

prettystem

This card (on the left) has the two stems stamped on it in Stazon Jet Black then watercoloured using the Classic Ink pads and the aqua painter. So you dont really need to have water colour crayons or pencils to watercolour – mind you it does help!

I’ve also used the pretty pink paper from the Berry Bliss Designer Series Paper pack. The sentiment comes from the Occasional Greetings stamp set and I just love this stamp. Actually it sits on my shelf as I use it so much.

groovystem

The card on the right uses the patterened paper from the lovely Afternoon Tea Designer Series Paper pack. I love this pack so be prepared to see it used quite a bit over the next 3 months!

I’ve just stamped the stem once in Stazon Jet Black on the Stampin’ Up! watercolour paper and again coloured using the Aqua Painter and ink from the classic stampin pads.

The sentiment is actually a rub on from the Hidden Garden Rubon set which is available in the Summer Mini Catalogue.

These cards are great for any occasion at all – just change the sentiment and it could be for anything from birthdays & get well to congratulations or even a sympathy card.

If you’d like to see how to used your ink pads as a watercolour palette then contact me today to book your demonstration or enrol in a technique class.

Make anything your own

You know how bad it feels when you turn up somewhere wearing the same dress as someone else and bringing out your coffee mug to make a cuppa at a crop or meeting and finding that someone else has exactly the same coffee mug? Well those days are gone!!

Coffee MugWith the 2008-2009 Catalogue Stampin’ Up!® introduced their rub ons to the Australian public. Yes I know we have had other brand rub ons here for quite some time I am very proud to say that the Stampin’ Up!® rub ons are of very high quality and I have not had one problem with them like I have with other (big) brand rub ons.

Before a recent demonstration where I thought I’d decorate a mug and give that to my hostess with a sachet of hot chocolate in there I would test them myself and I am very pleased to say they worked at home and the demonstration and my hostess (as well as her guests) were very impressed with it – I am sure that my hostess also enjoyed the hot chocolate!

diarySo when I came across the new Financial Year diaries in Big W last week and found a lovely pastel pink one but thought it would have been nice with a pattern on it I figured I’d survive.

So as I was sitting down preparing for a class and glanced and my coffee mug and had one of those light bulb moments and wondered how they’d go on my diary. So what’s a girl to do? I applied the rubons and boy did they look good.

Then I remembered seeing them on Tracey’s laptop so yeah I put a couple on there too.

Now I do a fair bit of work on my laptop and they have shown no signs of wear yet and one is where my wrist sits when I type -but then again it has only been 4 days!

laptop

Bit snazzy hey??

Remember a while back I made a friend a pocket card for her birthday with no stamping? that one was using rub ons too – here’s the card as a reminder and to show you that you can use rub ons for just about anything!

This was the card that was highlighted in the Splitcoast Stampers Weekly Inkling – the regular newsletter you can get for free and it is full of great information, tutorials and challenges and well worth signing up for!

I just followed the tutorial for the Trifold Pocket card which was written by the very talented Beate Johns.

Beate does such stunning work and writes wonderful tutorials so that anyone can follow them & make lovely cards – if I can do it anyone can!!

Now can you believe there is NO INK and NO STAMPS on this card???? yes its true! A bit unlike me hey? Nearly fell off my chair when I realised but boy how much do I love the new Stampin’ Up!® rub ons?? they are wonderful and work first go unlike some others I know of from a major brand too – but we wont talk about thems.
